We are still on the hypercars, cars that surpass supercars in each and every measure, engineered to break technological barriers and expectations.
The world of hypercars is only reserved for the top motor vehicle manufacturers, Porsche makes exceptional cars and its no wonder that they are well represented in the niche hypercar world.
Meet the Porsche 918 Spyder, a mid-engine, plug-in Hybrid sports car powered by a 4,593 cc naturally aspirated V8 engine. This engine parks a whooping 599 hp at 8,700 rpm, with two electric motors delivering an additional 282 hp for a combined output of 875 hp and 1,280 N⋅m (944 lbf⋅ft) of torque.
The Porsche 918 Spyder packs heavier and more powerful electric motors compared to its competitors from Ferrari and McLaren, giving it a higher battery capacity. In Car and Driver‘s independent test of the Porsche 918 they achieved 0–60 mph in 2.2 seconds, 0–100 mph in 4.9 seconds, 0–180 mph in 17.5 seconds, and the quarter mile in 9.8 seconds. This makes this awesome machine a track devil, breathing pure fire and thunder.
In September 2013 a 918 fitted with the optional ‘Weissach Package’ set a Nürburgring lap time of 6:57 on the 20.6 km (12.8 mi) road course, reducing the previous record by 14 seconds, and making it the first series production street-legal car to break the 7-minute barrier.
Pricing for the 918 Spyder started at US$845,000, Around KES 84,000,000. That is 84 Million Kenyan Shillings, making this a car accessible to only the top tier of the Kenyan elite. Below is a video from YouTube showing Richard Hammond pacing the Porsche 918 Spyder:
Like all Hypercars, the Porsche 918 Spyder is an engineering marvel, a new breed of machines that are redefining the world of motoring. We are hoping on of our Kenyan big wigs will surprise us with one of this machines.
